Why do otherwise reasonable, rational people, who under normal conditions expect evidence for assertions, believe the most absurd claims without question?
It is a result of Pavlovian conditioning: constant exposure to particular stories, with zero exposure to any dissenting voice—far from it, any questioning is considered heresy.
